One and half hour drive from central Kyoto, you can experience time slip to 100 yrs ago rural Japan landscape. 200 yrs old thatched roof houses still used as residential house for locals in the thatched village (known as "kayabuki no sato"), the heritage site.
In the village, 39 houses have thatched roofs. All are residential houses. Designated as the traditional buildings preservation district in 1993.
Retro postbox
Nostalgic scenery of a retro red pillar post box at the entrance of the village. It's still working as a post box.
Miyama Folklore Museum
You can see the inside of thatched house and lifestyle of rural old Japan. Backside of thatched roof is amazing!!
Chii Hachiman Shrine
Main hall of the shrine was built almost 200 yrs ago. Wood carvings on surface of the main hall are gorgeous!
Little Indigo Museum
The master indigo dyer Hiroyuki Shindo's museum. 1st floor is his studio. On the 2nd floor, a beautiful collection of vintage indigo textiles from Japan and abroad are displayed.
Around the Ohno Dam located at very west side of Miyama town, there are hiking trails and the multipurpose field. The dam lake is surrounded by 1000 cherry trees and 500 maple trees. Come with your family or friends and enjoy!
Rainbow Lake Tunnel
It's located in the middle of the hiking trail. 81-meters long retro looking tunnel. The panoramic view of Ohno village at the both end of this tunnel is prime viewing spot recommended by locals.
Koono bridge
Vermillion color suspension bridge. Scenery of river and mountains from here is one of the best photogenic spots.
Miyama milk is locally produced vat pasteurized milk (low temperature long time pasteurization). Its rich milk flavor is well known and loved by locals and a lot of tourists. You can buy gelato, cheese, yogurt and other sweets made by Miyama milk here!
